on trunk but on various other versions I've tried.

You should use
http://blackdog:password@server:8080

I just tried this and it works fine for me. Please verify that both the
client and the server have the most recent version of Fossil installed.
If that does not clear the problem, the please reopen the ticket providing
additional information on how to reproduce the problem.
